pantry raid
so i haven’t been blogging much as so much has gone on in my life over the past few months. including a break up and leaving my job. life is always going to be full of challenges, but this year, when it rains it pours.
being suddenly broker than i have been in years has lead to cutting back on going out and partying too much and fancy meals out. although recently i did try raw oysters for the first time at the urging of a friend. they were amazing. really super good. ahh the salad days before i lost my job.
one experiment i am trying now is called “operation pantry raid” in which i make an effort to eat everything in the fridge and the pantry without buying much from the store. kind of like emptying your food piggy bank.
its pretty crazy what you end up with in your pantry. and how long it stays there. i have for instance, sushi rice, nori papers, and sushi vinegar that i bought about two years ago that i have never opened.i also have a can of something called palm honey. i think it belonged to one of my room mates 3 years ago. i vow to put these things to use!
yesterday morning i had oatmeal. thats not weird in itself. its weird that i have 3 different kinds, totaling 5 packages. i have not purchased oatmeal to my knowledge in the last 2 years at least, maybe more. why do i have so much? do i forget every time i make cookies? i think that might be it.. but thats a lot of free breakfasts man!
last nights dinner was frozen tuna steaks (been in there months!) . creamed spinach (ok i had to get matt to buy milk and cream cheese) .. that spinach had been in there for at least 3 years. and mashed potatoes. which we always have in endless supply. total cost for a dinner for 3 (not counting what we spent months or years ago when we all had jobs) about 2 bucks.
this morning pancakes.. yes i know that bisquick box says BEST before 9/23/07 but it should say GOOD until you dust it off and eat it.. i also found some very fancy organic syrup in the fridge door. big dave brought that over when he made us fried chicken and waffles when we first moved in.. so what if it has a chunk of crystalized sugar the size of a tennis ball in it? the rest tasted yum yum yum..
so the raid continues.
